The Vietnam Naval Ship Design Institute announced the development and testing of the country’s first naval kamikaze drone, equipped with computer vision.
Images released by the state channel VTV1 show the equipment in action and indicate that it has a parabolic antenna for long-range control, possibly via Starlink, and an optical station with a target acquisition system, which can ensure more precise guidance in case of signal loss.

According to official sources, the drone was manufactured by a company linked to the General Department of Defense Industry and “meets modern military product standards.” The announcement is part of a broader effort by the Vietnamese military industry, which already produces other national models such as the spear-shaped UAV BXL.01 and the reconnaissance quadcopters QXL.01, developed by the state-owned Z131 Factory.
The development comes amid growing interest in maritime drones due to tensions in the South China Sea between Beijing and neighboring countries, especially Vietnam and the Philippines, over territorial disputes and naval incidents.
At the same time, there are also diplomatic moves involving Ukraine and the Philippines: in early September, a possible defense agreement for joint production of maritime drones was discussed, with a Ukrainian delegation expected in Manila and a draft already submitted to the Philippine Department of Defense; the document could be signed by October.
